Poe Essay - 809 Words

Edgar Allan Poe said â€Å"I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.† Throughout his short stories; â€Å"The Black Cat† and â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart†, Poe sets up his characters to subconsciously reveal their insanity. Often using syntax clues and patterns, Poe shows the madness of the narrators of his short stories. The constant theme of denial of insanity further convinces the reader of the character’s psychosis. Characters themselves often prove they are not in touch with reality through their actions. Through syntax, denial of insanity, and character’s actions, Poe allows his narrators in â€Å"The Black Cat† and â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart† to reveal their own insanity. Sentence structure is used consistently by Poe in his short stories to†¦show more content†¦Syntax isn’t the only way Poe manipulates his narrators to show their own madness. The constant theme of denial of insanity further convinces the reader of the characters’ senselessness. Poe, in â€Å"The Black Cat† writes â€Å"Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my very senses reject their own evidence. Yet, mad I am not – and surely do I not dream.†(H/O). Here, the narrator of â€Å"The Black Cat† states that it is possible for his actions and thought process to be interpreted as mad, still in his mind, he is not mad at all. By denying his insanity, the narrator creates a suspicion in the reader, making them question the integrity of his mind. The narrator of â€Å"The Tell-Tale Heart† is more adamant about repeating the fact that he is not insane. â€Å"†¦will you say that I am mad?...I have heard many things i n hell. How, then, am I mad?† (Poe H/O) The narrator obviously worries about the fact that people may see him as a lunatic. The reader can infer that by denying his lack of sanity, and clinging to the hope that he may in fact have a sound mind; the narrator has lost all sense of reality, and cannot be trusted. Both of these stories have similar narrators in the sense that they may have once been sane, and a traumatic event has pushed them over the edge into the depths of derangement. While the above points may be valid and prove a point, nothing really shows who someone is more than what he or she may do. Also, IBM had put its resources to good use by developing new kinds of mainframes and servers that would appeal to a wider number of customers groups and expand global sales. Proprietary standard * Establishing a proprietary standard as the industry standard may require the company to win a format war against a competing and incompatible standard. Strategies for doing this include producing complementary products, leveraging killer applications, using aggressive pricing and marketing, licensing the technology, and cooperating with competitors * E. G. IBM could produce complementary products, leverage killer software that they have been acquiring and perfecting it, also using aggressive pricing and marketing to let gain new consumers. Strategy in the Global Market By serving as a global market, a company can potentially utilize its production facilities more intensively, which leads to higher productivity, lower costs and greater profitability. Global sales also increase the size of the enterprise, so its bargaining power with suppliers increase, which may allow it to bargain down the cost of key inputs and boost more profitability. IBM made the investment to establish huge, low-cost service delivery centers for its global clients by improving the software necessary to automate the management of networks and data centers, and develop IT to improve telecommunications, especially Internet services. From India, IBM runs a whole range of IT services for its global customers. In Bangalore, IBM has a command center that monitors the ope ration of the database server networks of more than 16,000 clients. Through this, IBM was forced to eliminate 20,000 jobs in Europe and the US, and move these jobs to India as the cost of labour in India is significantly low. Corporate Level Strategy Vertical Integration * This could enable IBM to achieve a competitive advantage by helping build barriers to entry, facilitating investments in specialized assets, protecting product quality, and helping to improve scheduling between adjacent stages in the value chain * One of the disadvantages is that it increases bureaucratic costs if IBM’s supplier becomes lazy or inefficient, and it reduces flexibility when technology is changing fast or demand is uncertain Strategy Outsourcing By strategic outsourcing of value creation activities, it may allow a company to lower its costs, better differentiate its products, and make better use of scarce resources, while also enabling it to respond rapidly to changing market conditions * One of the disadvantages is that if IBM outsources important value creation activities or becomes too dependent on the key suppliers of those activities * IBM has invested in India to take advantage of its growing importance as a m arket for technology products and a source of high-technology workers. IBM made the investment to establish huge, low-cost service delivery centers for its global clients, improve the software necessary to automate the management of networks and data centers, and develop IT to improve telecommunications. IBM runs a whole range of IT services for its global customers, including software delivery services such as upgrading and maintaining client software and managing and protecting database centers in India. Also in Bangalore, IBM has a command center that monitors the operation of the database server networks. The largest of IBM’s three global IT service centers are in India, Brazil, and China. IBM’s scope was to expand traditional outsourcing operations and attract more and more global clients to compensate for reduced profit margins so it can still increase profits from this group. Related and Unrelated Diversification Acquisitions * Acquisitions are used to pursue vertical integration or diversification when a company lacks the distinctive competencies necessary to compete in the industry. Acquisitions are often perceived as being less risky than internal new ventures because they involve less commercial uncertainty. * IBM has done many acquisitions, such as Lotus, CenterPoint Energy, Phillippines PSBank, PTT Chemical Public Company of Thailand, Skynet in Lithuania, Cognos etc. which helps IBM increase its expertise in specialized IT services to strengthen its competitive advantage Corporate Performance, Governance, and Business Ethics ROIC 1) Participate in growing market 2) Take market share from competitors ) Consolidate industry through horizontal integration 4) International expansion, vertical integration or diversification * E. G. For IBM, pursing strategies to maximize profitability and profit growth helps a company to better satisfy the demands that several stakeholder groups place on it, not the other way around. Also, by maximizing returns to stockholders, IBM could boost its profitability and profit growth rate to be consistent in satisfying the claims of s everal other key stakeholder groups. Ethics * Despite the argument that maximizing long-run profitability and profit growth is the best way to satisfy the claims of several key stakeholder groups, a company must do so within the limits set by the law and in a manner consistent with societal expectations * It is incumbent on managers at IBM to make sure that the company is in compliance with these laws when pursuing strategies. Unfortunately, there is plenty of evidence that managers can be tempted to cross the line between the legal and illegal in their pursuit of greater profitability and profit growth. IBM could hold many various seminars on the topic of ethics and to try and implement ethical protocols when dealing with an issue that arises. Implementing Strategy in Companies that Compete in a Single Industry Strategic Reward Systems * Organizations strive to control employees’ behavior by linking reward systems to their control systems. Based on a IBM’s strategy (cost leadership or differentiation), strategic manager must decide which behaviors to reward. Selecting, Developing an Action/Implementation Plan * Disadvantage of acquisitions * Many acquisitions fail to increase the profitability of the acquiring company and may result in losses. Acquisition may fail to raise the performance of the acquiring companies suggesting that acquisitions usually destroy rather than create value. As IBM is acquiring many types of software to enhance its competitive advantage, but it may fail to raise the performance of the acquiring companies for four reasons * Companies frequently experience management problems when they attempt to integrate a different company’s organizational structure and culture into their own * Companies often overestimate the potential economic benefits from an acquisition * Acquisitions tend to be so expensive that they do not increase future profitability * Companies are often negligent in s creening their acquisition targets and fail to recognize important problems with their business models * IBM should be firm on their management organization structure to refrain any management problems with IBM makes an acquisition * IBM should weight out all the pros and cons to distinguish whether the acquisition is beneficial to the company or not. Also, when doing the acquisition, IBM should think of all the important problems that align with their current business model * Outsourcing * IBM will fail when their profitability is now substantially lower than the average profitability of its competitors; it has lost the ability to attract and generate resources, so its profit margins and invested capitals are shrinking rapidly. IBM will have to acquire many new software to keep their competitive advantage * IBM should incorporate quality control in those countries that they have outsourced their services and consulting to continue to attract and generate resources and have profit margins still high How to cite Strategic Planning – Ibm 2009, Papers

Gender Inequality in UK Labour Review

Question: Discuss about the Gender Inequality in UK for Labour Review. Answer: Introduction Women power in professional work set-up is yet unexplored and mostly undermine. Having gender inequality in the industry shrinks the talent available in an economy leading to a negative consequence. Changing dynamics of running a family, increasing demand for monetary resources and quest to achieve career aspiration has led women coming out for work prevalent. Social practices and religious practices that secluded women from mainstream have profound consequences on talent management across organizations (Ashburner, 1994). Gender Disparity in UK In UK most women employee has been treated unequal with their male subordinates on assigning responsibilities, compensations, opportunities etc. Many of them remain at the middle management level or opt to move out of their career advancement. It happens due to inadequate corporate support to help them create a balance between family and professional aspiration. More than a quarter of women at work have faced some sort of gender discrimination at workplace. According to estimates, 54% of the working women are found to be working part-time, 2.8 million women are working below the required scale. Also among the 70% of the people with minimum wages jobs are primarily women (Darnell Gadiesh, 2013). To correct the situation many organizations in UK have come up with gender parity program to undermine the pressure for women. Considering such initiatives companies aim to create a culture shift that provides them a competitive edge to attract new talent as well as retain them. The Brains Survey in 2013 found that these programs arent succeeding due to inadequate support from the senior management, leaders as well as two sexes in the organization itself. The indifference in the perception of both male and female workers concerning the parity as a strategic issue in their companies (Beneria, 1999). There are several factors identified causing gender disparity in organizations considering a barrier to success. There are structural barriers where women are expected to balance work and family commitment, which gradually slow down their career progression. Lesser supportive spouse giving his job more importance has major influence over women career choices. Lack of innovative approach to balance family and work life in UK has worsened the situation. Women bearing a child often becomes a target to gender parity much faster, losing future opportunities and opting for lesser challenging jobs (Jourov, 2015). Outline of the Report The report is going to discuss the issue of gender inequality persisting in the professional scenario in UK. It will analyze the three prime concern on the issues to help understand the present state, need to change as well as a solution to address the issues at a broader level. It will highlight the importance of promoting gender equality, factors at prevent women taking progressive steps and solutions to address the issue. Factors to Gender Inequality It has become important to highlight as well as implement policy reforms to change the attitude of the organizations practicing gender disparity. Along with that, it is also required to change the perception of people with regards to having a positive attitude towards accepting women workforce with their commitments and support them at each step. Importance of promoting gender equality at the workplace The Pool of Talent - To have an appropriate mix of talent within the organization it becomes important to eliminate gender equality. It gives a business much more sense; a business can make more profit only if it can attract both men and women successfully at work. According to the Global Gender Gap report, women seem to have higher education than men with better sense of business understanding as well as execution. To face stiff competition in the UK market and to create sustainability for long run, organizations need to have the best talent regardless of gender (Cassell Walsh, 1993). Save cost - Having a situation where men and women both are leaving organizations at the same time can cost organization disorientation and unachievable targets. A company supporting gender equality in UK would be able to retain its workforce on value and not on gender biases. It will further help organization making unnecessary expenses, saving cost involved in recruiting and advertising, process of recruitment as well as training the new on-the-board employee. Improving Economic Performance Having a pool of both men and women workforce would enhance the decision-making power. It together brings in varied perspective, provides a more holistic approach to work when facing an issue and as a group it brings out higher efforts. Combining the two perspective and implementing them in an ideal way can lead to an improved decision making of an organization. Together as a team both gender can play a balancing act and streamline the work process at the same time (Norton Fox, 1997). Strategic Perspective Practicing gender parity does not mean giving equal work or assuming men and women as same. The strategic perspective needs to bring in change by understanding that gender equality stands on providing roles and responsibility as well as opportunities to individual without any gender bias. The mainstreaming strategy needs to design activities that support womens needs and priorities. Women-specific projects here seem to have an important role to play to create an empowering space for female gender. These projects would enable them to apply and implement their strategic framework to conquer the mainstream (Persson Jonung, 1998). Sharing Opportunities for Economic Growth Women at work are either kept underpaid or are not provided with ample opportunities to prove themselves at work. This situation can eventually affect the economic condition of the country, under-utilising the resource. Women a major resourceful means considering the knowledge and higher education potential they have been required to provide with equal opportunities at work. Their contribution can help companies make profit as well as earn more disposable income. Higher income level would also enhance the spending power and overall benefit the economic condition of the UK market. Factors that prevent women's progression at the workplace There are many factors that hamper the growth of women in the professional workplace subject to their commitment and prevailing gender disparity in the organizations. Family Commitments Women are socially bound with the system of managing family and performing household jobs. This ideology has driven men in the society to command more, being an earning member in every household. To look after their family commitments, women often choose to opt out from their challenging job profile or leave job in major cases. The support required from work is often disappointing as the organizational leaders themselves does not perceive women equality (Pfeffer, 1998). Child Care Most women have experienced harassment at work during the period of their pregnancy. Women are often asked to step down from their current profile considering their inability to perform the same in future. Over 1500 offices in UK, 26% of the women workers felt that having children would hamper their professional growth. They are often asked about their plan to start a family during interviews, making it a criterion forr selection or rejection. Despite huge progress in the field of education, technology and economic expansion, the outlook of the organizations remains the old way. In UK up to 30,000 women are sacked each year on the grounds of being pregnant. A large number of those who remain in the system are often lose out on their promotions as a result of their pregnancy announcement (Porter, 1990). Lack of Leadership Among the top positions in the organization only a few have women representation. Among the majority of the workforce females opting for higher responsibilities are extremely few in numbers considering the lack of support from the organizational level. The wage gap created at different level of work has also impacted the choices of women to work for longer hours but paid less. It is important that the leaders understand the importance of women workforce, creating multiple avenues to attract and retain them such as flexible working hours, option to work from home, etc. these options are required to practice to give women equal opportunities to prove their competencies at work (Rees, 1998). Negative Image created through Media Over the years there has been a negative image created for women in media communication. Women are shown weaker and are a sensitive target to the changing social norms. This picture has created an opinion about women being unproductive for the market. Change at every level is required whether it is policy, behavioral or perception to practice women equality in the UK industry (Pfeffer, 1998). Women Absence in Decision Making It is not only in the organizations where women participation is challenging, but it is also the government departments where women seems to be in minority. The under-representation matters in creating an overall image as well as message conveying women as second choice. Women make up only 17% of the board of directors of the top 100 companies in UK. The over-representation of men propagates policies and decision making, making it harder to address or acknowledge the gender-specific issues. Having more women in power can help in addressing concern related to gender specific violence, disparity issues, maternity laws and provisions, etc (Shapiro, 1999). Organizational solutions to address the issue of Gender Discrimination It is evident that the perception and social norms that profound to have a greater impact on gender equality need to pay attention to. Reforming Policies It is imperative that organizations must review their policies to support women participation by giving them multiple options to work. Organizations are required to review their diversity and equality policies to ensure having enough scope created to support women workforce. These clauses required to be communicated at each level so that women are nowhere faces disparity at the cost of its gender. Also, the management must review the company family-friendly policies which include shared parental leaves, maternity leave, etc that can help women stay in the system and can climb her career ladder (Shapiro, 2000). Having Women at Leadership Position To overcome the issue about women inequality it is important to have a gender representation at the top level. A women leader at a senior management level would help bridge the gap of communication as well as can discuss policy initiatives on their behalf. Women leaders can help creating a balance in the decision making process in the organization by lending an alternative perspective. These leaders are the real representation of women power in the organization, bringing out the best from the system and the workforce (Wajcman, 1991). Mentorship Program Women by nature are given numerous responsibilities and adequate capabilities to perform these duties. Similarly bearing a child is one of the important ones who needs to be appreciated and supported. To support women after the maternity leave companies can offer their women staff a mentor, such support helps them get back to work schedule much faster. Such mentorship program inspires women workforce to join work back sooner. It further guides them with the work changes taken place during their period of absence without hampering their performance as well as any potential risk to the organization (LSE., 2015). Gender Parity Program Companies across UK need to work on their gender parity programs to address to the increasing pressure on women to perform. To achieve competitive edge these gender parity programs can help attract new talent as well as retain the existing one. It is important that the management organizes training and development initiatives to communicate the importance of such programs to both men and women for better growth in the market. Equal opportunities must be provided to both genders to avoid any disparity with regards to differential pay scales. Promotion and increment must be dependent on the performance of an individual rather than calling it a gender specific thing (Orgad. S, 2015). Strict Clauses against Gender-Based Violence - All organizations in UK must maintain strict clause against any gender bias observed or practiced within the organization. Integrity and honesty must be practiced to create a productive environment within the organization. The employee-employer relationship must be based on honesty with no forced implementation on targets or cheating or disclosure of personal information or demine the professional growth etc. (Bourdieu, 1989). Recommendation After having an in-depth understanding of the women power and gender disparity existing in the work set-up in UK. There are certain things that organizations can amend as well as introduce to reduce the gap such as: Implement employee well-being policy It is important that organizations identify the needs of employees before they recruit them. Like the case of both male and female, if they intend to plan a family soon, an organization must consider its family policy with regards to parental leave to help them taking care of their child. This way an employee would also have clarity about his or her leaves and plan things accordingly. Work-Life Balance Opportunities to all employees much be given equally to help them taking care of their health, family and other personal requirements. The employee must be motivated to practice work-life balance for better efficiency and satisfaction. Having options such as flexible working hours, work from home, etc must be offered as and when required to avoid absenteeism and under productivity. Review Recruitment Policy Organizations must review the existing recruitment policy to eliminate any discriminatory criterion, making sure that the position is offered after genuine selection process. Set a Women Workforce Ratio To have clarity with the number of over and under-represented group of men women in the organization, it must set a criterion of having a predetermined ratio. Such ratio helps organization maintain women workforce across all level. Conclusion Gender inequality has been an issue with greater significance and required higher attention at every level in UK industry. The report has been able to highlight the issue with regards to the importance of having gender equality at a work place. Equality at work ensures the environment is productive as well as acceptable for both genders. It further advocated reasons causing gender inequality in the organizations such as family commitment, childcare, negative image, lack of leadership, etc. The study has also discussed possible ways in which these organizations in UK can overcome the issue of gender disparity through women leadership, mentorship program, reviewing reforming the existing recruitment policies, etc. To implement certain changes, recommendation has been suggested such as work-life balance, employee well-being, reforming policies and setting men to women ratio at a work place. We hope this disparity against gender in UK would soon be over and women can be provided with better opportunities. Bibliography Ashburner, L., 1994. The Last Lesson free essay sample

Franz didn’t want to go to school that day as his French teacher Mr. Hamel had announced that he would take a test on French Participles and Franz unprepared for it. Franz was afraid of M Hamel’s ruler and being scolded. Although Franz was more interested in spending day out of school, he eventually decided to go to school. On the way he passed through the Town Hall where a huge crowd had gathered around the notice board. Franz didn’t stop there as he was well aware that this board had always been serving bad news about the war. Blacksmith told him no need to hurry for school but Franz thought he was making fun of him. On Reaching School he was surprised to see the sea change in daily environment. There was no noise as usual, no lesson chanting sound by students. It seemed as a Sunday morning. We will write a custom essay sample on The Last Lesson or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page All students were already in their class room. M Hamel was walking with his iron ruler under his arm. Franz was frightened to enter in class as he thought that he would be scolded badly as he was very late but to his surprise, M Hamel did not say anything to him, rather welcomed him politely â€Å"Go to your place quickly little Franz, we were beginning without you†. After sitting on his seat Franz noticed that teacher was wearing his beautiful green coat, frilled shirt with a little black silk cap having embroidery on it, this type of dress usually he wore on functions or prize ceremonies only. Franz also noticed that the other villager including old Hauser, former Mayor and former post master were also presented in class they were in last benches. He couldn’t understand until M Hamel announced the notice which was served from Berlin that now onwards no French would be taught in schools of Alsace and Lorraine, only German would be taught in the schools of these two French cities and he emotionally requested students to be more attentive for their last French lesson. Franz now realized that what was there on notice board in Town Hall. These words of notice fell on Franz like a thunder clap. He couldn’t believe it would be his last lesson that day. He was badly repenting that why he didn’t learn, never paid attention to his lessons. He hardly knew how to read and write French. He was repenting that instead of studying he would go for other pleasant activities. His book that seemed always burden to him now to same appeared to him like old friends. Even his thoughts for his teacher M. Hamel changed thinking as realized that he would never see him again as it was his last day in the school. He forgot about his cranky nature and his cruel ruler. Now he could that the teacher had wore this dress in honor of his last lesson. He also understood why older people were presented in class as they were repenting why they never worry to go to school and they were there to show their respect to their teacher, who served them for forty years. When Franz’s name was called to recite the lesson, he made mistake and could even speak few words just opposite to his thinking teacher did not scold him rather he preached him that one should not waste his precious time just by live in impression that there is plenty of time and postponing the important things for next day. How would they feel when someone will make fun of them that they were not able to speak or write the French despite of being Frenchmen? Teacher did not put all blame on him but he also blamed the parents who never bothered to send their children to school to study instead they put their children to work on farms and in mill to earn extra money. Even he blamed himself that he often would send his pupils to water his plants instead of study at school and he would declare a holiday whenever he wanted to go to fishing. Teacher further said about the French language that it was the most beautiful, clearest and most logical language of the world. People should stick with their language it will be proven as the key to their prison in case they are enslaved. A magic had happened that day in class the students understood everything very well, because they were more attentive and teacher was more patient and polite on that day. Finally with very heavy heart, M Hamel stood up, he was very sad as he walked to the black board, took a chalk and wrote on it â€Å"Vive La France† which means â€Å"Long Live France† and declared the class was dismissed.

Effects of Drug and Alcohol Abuse on Domestic Violence Essays

Effects of Drug and Alcohol Abuse on Domestic Violence Essays Effects of Drug and Alcohol Abuse on Domestic Violence Essay Effects of Drug and Alcohol Abuse on Domestic Violence Essay Introduction Domestic force is besides known as spousal maltreatment, domestic maltreatment, confidant spouse force ( IPV ) or child maltreatment. It is hence defined as opprobrious behaviours by either one or both spouses in a relationship. Such intimate relationships include: household, dating, matrimony, cohabitation or friends. Domestic force take many signifiers such as physical aggression or maltreatment ( seize with teething, kicking, throwing objects to a spouse, striking, keeping, slapping, jostling ) , or menaces, stalking, bullying, ruling or commanding, sexual maltreatment, emotional maltreatment, economic want and inactive maltreatment which is besides known as covert maltreatment such as disregard. These maltreatments if invariably repeated can take to self injury, mental unwellness and an effort to perpetrate self-destruction. Drug maltreatment is besides known as substance maltreatment ; it is referred to as a maladaptive behaviour of the usage of drugs and alcoholic substance that is dependent. Some of the drugs which can be abused include: bhang, cocaine, intoxicant, Quaalude, benzodiazepines, opioids and pep pills among others. Using these drugs on a regular basis can take to lasting dependence, societal, physical and psychological injury which can be irreversible if non treated at the early phases. Harmonizing to the research conducted, drug and intoxicant maltreatment have a direct correlativity between these emerging domestic force issues. The research findings indicated that, domestic force is caused by high rates of drug and intoxicant maltreatment used by these violent and chesty people. Batterers abuse drugs and intoxicant which in bend addition the chance of domestic force. Drug maltreatment and domestic force interact and they are correlated therefore both of them should be addressed at the same time. A few instances of domestic force can offer equal guiding and guidance or wellness services plans for drug and intoxicant maltreaters. Spousal maltreatment Spousal maltreatment is a broad issue including sexual maltreatment, psychological maltreatment or emotional maltreatment, verbal maltreatment, fiscal maltreatment, economic maltreatment and physical maltreatment. The research shows that the culprits of spousal maltreatment can either be the female or male as can be the victims. However, most of the informations collected after carry oning research shows that, abused victims are largely female and battered work forces instances are rare. Drug maltreatment was rated as the major cause of this job brought approximately by the maltreatment of drugs. A spouse who is abused can go feeble, die and lack societal power of interaction hence remaining an stray life from his or her friends. Gender of attacker In most instances, adult females fall victims of slaying by an confidant spouse either in a matrimony, cohabitating, dating or in a friendly relationship. A research conducted in United States of America ( USA ) shows that ; out of 1,642 instances reported, three one-fourth ( 1,218 ) are female and merely 424 are male who are killed by their confidant spouse. This is regardless of which spouse ( male or female ) started the force. Harmonizing to the analysis done by Dr. Martin, F. from California State University in the section of Psychology, it indicated that adult females are more physically aggressive than their male opposite numbers in the relationship. However, research carried out by Kimmel Michael found out that, work forces are the chief cause of domestic struggles and force ; because adult females overestimate the usage of force as work forces underestimate it. On the other manus, the National Institute of Justice on its surveies found out that, work forces are abused by adu lt females every bit or even more than they abuse adult females. In both surveies, it does non give facts on who started or initiated the force or struggle. Straus and Gelles found out that, domestic force ensuing from drug maltreatment is normally common with both spouses brawling and reacting every bit. Womans have been known to utilize arms while contending ( domestic force ) whether by throwing frying pans, home bases, cups or mugs. It has besides been proven that, adult females can seek aid from other people if they are determined to kill their confidant partner ; nevertheless, such incidences are non counted as domestic force but slaying. There are three common types of domestic twosome force associated with drug maltreatment and these are: common twosome force ( CCV ) , violent terrorist act ( IT ) and common violent control ( MVC ) . The common twosome force arises when either of the spouses or both try to command the behaviour of his or her partner floging out at the other spouse with ill will. Intimate terrorist act is more common type of force and it is non common hence will affect serious hurts and contusions. It may include psychological and emotional maltreatments if one spouse is dominant and he or she is under the influence of drugs. Barrett, Meisner and Stewart, Sharper. Having recent statistics makes it effectual in presenting the intended message in a clearer mode in that it can be understood because of its lucidity and clearcutness. Causes of drug and intoxicant maltreatment on domestic force There are many causes associated with drugs abuse that make people to indulge in drugs. As it is said that, bad company ruins good moral ; many people have confessed that their friends introduced them to take drugs. With the influence of drugs, people become aggressive and violent particularly to their confidant spouse, kids, friends and their fellow or miss friend. Research has shown that, some people can make up ones mind to utilize drugs because of emphasis, difficult economic times, and depression or lose of a spouse or a parent who was a exclusive staff of life victor. Effectss of drug maltreatment and intoxicant on domestic force Drug maltreatment has negative impacts to the people and society. There are no positive effects though some people believe that, some of the drugs are medicative in nature and can bring around some unwellnesss. Peoples who are drug nuts have been known to do force particularly to their spouses. This is evidenced between a married woman and a hubby where one of the spouses can be battered or abused by the other. This has been proven to increase degrees of emphasis and depression in the household. Due to misconstruing, struggles and battles between the married woman and hubby, will impact the kids either straight or indirectly. The kids will non acquire the attending, attention and love or fondness they need. Due to the influence of drugs, a spouse in an confidant relationship may be killed, bruised or injured. In most states, due to changeless maltreatment ( sexual or physical maltreatment ) some married twosomes have divorced, some broke up their friendly relationship or wooing before acquiring married. Under such fortunes, kids schooling will non execute as expected and others may drop out because the parents are no longer responsible to pay school fees and to supply school uniforms. If kids are non taken attention of, they will free hope and in the long tally indulge in drugs therefore doing more jobs to the society, household and their organic structures. Because the kids lack basic demands, they will make anything bad to acquire some money to purchase nutrient including stealing. Insecurity will increase larceny and robbery with force and colza instances will lift due to miss of ethical motives due to drugs influence. It is hence clear that drugs and intoxicant affects people s wellness and causes disunity and tenseness in households. Possible solutions Many people particularly the medical experts have suggested some possible solutions to this job. For those who are already addicted with drugs, rehabilitation centres or establishments should be established. Such rehabilitation centres will help those who are chronic because proper medical attending will be provided by qualified doctors. Parents have a greater duty to take attention of their kids by transfusing subject and good ethical motives in them. Responsible parents will train their kids with an purpose of rectifying them when they do anything incorrect. This will guarantee that kids will non tie in with some people or friends with bad wonts such as smoke, taking intoxicant or other drugs such as cocaine and bhang. In every society or community, there are ethical motives, norms and regulations which must be adhered to by all people. These ethical motives and norms forbid immoral actions such as drug maltreatment and domestic force. Religious establishment must get down guiding and guidance plans so as to steer and advocate people with psychological jobs associated with drugs and domestic force. Steering and reding plans should be supported by the authorities by guaranting that every small town has atleast two qualified guiding and guidance experts. The authorities should ordain rigorous Torahs to penalize those involved in drug trafficking in the state. Those got prosecuting in domestic force Acts of the Apostless such as banging, sexual torment, seize with teething and crushing must confront the jurisprudence and be a lesson to them and discourage others from making the same. The wellness section should besides play a major function in educating people in small towns and all learning establishments on the effects of drugs and intoxicant on their wellness.

Chronic Absenteeism Related to Drop-out Rates

Chronic Absenteeism Related to Drop-out Rates While most educators, students, and parents  think of September as back-to-school month, that same  month recently has been given another important education designation. Attendance Works, a national initiative that is  dedicated to improving the policy, practice and research around school attendance has named September as National Attendance Awareness Month.  Ã‚   Student absences are at crisis levels. A September 2016 report Preventing Missed Opportunity: Taking Collective Action to Confront Chronic Absence using data provided by the  U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR) reveals that, the  promise of an equal opportunity to learn is being broken for far too many children. More than 6.5 million students, or about 13 percent, miss three or more weeks of school, which is enough time to erode their achievement and threaten their chance of graduating.  Nine out of 10 U.S. school districts experience some level of chronic absenteeism among students. To counter this problem,  Attendance Works,  a fiscally-sponsored project of the Child and Family Policy Center non-profit organization, is working as a  national and state initiative that  promotes better policy and practice around school attendance. According to the organizations  website, We [Attendance Works]  promote tracking chronic absence data for each student beginning in kindergarten, or ideally earlier, and partnering with families and community agencies to intervene when poor attendance is a problem for students or schools. Attendance is a critically important factor in education, from developing national funding formulas  to predicting graduation outcomes.   Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which guides federal investments in elementary and secondary education for states, has chronic absenteeism as  reporting element.   At every grade level, in every school district, across the nation,  educators know first hand that too many absences can  disrupt  a students learning and the learning of others. Research on Attendance A student is considered chronically absent if they miss only  two days of school per month  (18 days in a year), whether the absences are excused or unexcused.  Research shows that by  middle and high school, chronic absence is a leading warning sign that a student will drop out. This research from the National Center on Educational Statistics noted that differences  in absentee rates and projections for graduation  were observed as early as kindergarten.  Those students who eventually dropped out of high school had missed significantly more days of school in first grade than their peers who later graduated from high school. Moreover, in a study by E.  Allensworth  and J. Q. Easton, (2005) called  The On-Track Indicator as a Predictor of High School Graduation: In eighth grade, this [attendance]  pattern was even more apparent and, by ninth grade, attendance was shown to be a key indicator significantly correlated with high school graduation (Allenworth/Easton). Their study  found attendance and studying more predictive of dropout than test scores or other student characteristics. In fact, 9th grade attendance was a better predictor of [student] dropout than 8th grade test scores. Steps can be taken at at the upper  grade levels, grades 7-12, and  Attendance Works offers  several suggestions to counter attitudes that prevent students from attending school. These suggestions include: incentives/rewards/recognition provided  for good attendance;personal calls (to home, to students) as reminders;  adult mentors and after  school leaders trained to reinforce the importance of attendance;curriculum that features engaging, team-based activities that students do not want to miss;  Ã‚  academic support provided to students who are struggling;  efforts to make  school a place of success rather than a negative experience; engaging community partners, such as, health providers and criminal justice agencies. National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP) Test Data A state-by-state analysis of NAEP   testing data shows that students who miss more school than their peers score lower on the NAEP tests in grades 4 and 8. These lower scores were found to be consistently true in every racial and ethnic group and in every state and city examined. In many cases,  the students with more absences have skill levels one to two years below their peers. In addition, While students from low-income families are more likely to be chronically absent, the ill effects of missing too much school hold true for all socio-economic groups. Grade 4 test data,   absentee students scored an average 12 points lower on the reading assessment than those with no absences - more than a full grade level on the NAEP achievement scale. Supporting the theory that academic loss is cumulative,   Grade 8  absentee students scored an average 18 points lower on the math assessment.   Mobile Apps Connectto Parents and Other Stakeholders Communication is one way educators can work to reduce student absenteeism. There are a growing number of mobile  apps educators can use to connect educators with students and parents. These software platforms share the daily classroom activities (EX:  Collaborize Classroom, Google Classroom,  Edmodo). Many of these platforms allow parents and authorized stakeholders to see short and long term  assignments and individual student work. Other mobile messaging apps (Remind,  Bloomz,  Classpager,  Class Dojo,  Parent Square)  are great resources  to increase regular communication between a students  home and school.  Ã‚  These messaging platforms can  allow teachers to emphasize  attendance from day one. These mobile apps can be tailored to providing student updates on individual attendance or used to sharing data about the importance of attendance in order to promote  a culture of attendance all year long. Conferences:Traditional Connections to Parents and Other Stakeholders There are also more traditional methods to share the importance  of regular attendance with all stakeholders. At the beginning of the school year, teachers can leverage the time during a  parent-teacher conference to talk about attendance if there are already signs or a pattern to a student missing school. Mid-year conferences or conference requests can be helpful in making face-to-face connections that   Teachers  can take the opportunity to make suggestions to parents or guardians that  older students need routines for  homework and  sleep. Cell phones, video games and computers should not be part of a bedtime routine. Too tired to go to school should not be an excuse. Teachers and school administrators  should also  encourage families to  avoid extended vacations during the school year, and to try to line up vacations with the school’s schedule of days off or holidays. Finally, teachers and school administrators   should remind parents and guardians the academic importance of planning doctor and dentist appointments during  after school hours. Announcements regarding a schools attendance policy should be made at the beginning of the school year, and repeated regularly throughout the school year.   Newsletters, Flyers, Postersand Websites The school website should promote daily attendance. Updates on daily school attendance should be displayed on the home pages of every school. The high visibility of this information will help to reinfrce the importance of school attendance. Information about the negative impact of absenteeism and the positive role daily attendance has on academic achievement can be placed in newsletters, on posters and circulated on flyers. Placement of these flyers and posters are not limited to the school property. Chronic absenteeism is a community problem, particularly at the upper grade levels, as well. A coordinated effort to share information about academic damage caused by chronic absenteeism should be shared throughout the local community. Business and political leaders in the community should receive regular updates on how well students are meeting the goal of improving daily attendance. Additional information should feature the  importance of attending  school as a students most important job. Anecdotal information such as the facts listedon this flyer for high school parentsor  listed below can be promoted in schools and throughout the community: Missing one or two days a month can add up to nearly 10 percent of the school year.  Students who attend school set up the routines for future employment and showing up for for work on time every day.Students who attend school regularly are more likely to graduate and find good jobs. High school  graduates make, on average, a million dollars more than a dropout over a lifetime.School only gets harder when students  stay home.  Too many absent students can affect the whole classroom, creating redundant instruction and slowing down other students. Conclusion Students who miss school, whether the absences are  sporadic or on consecutive days of school, miss academic time in their classrooms that cannot be made up. While some absences are unavoidable, it is critically important to have students in school for learning. Their academic success depends on daily attendance at every grade level. NOTE: An infographic with additional statistics to share with students and families with younger students is offered by Attendance Works on this link.

Dyson Casestudy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Dyson Casestudy - Essay Example Strategic capabilities Dyson was operating in a very competitive environment. This called for the need to introduce new frameworks and innovations that would see the company survive in the market. James Dyson believed in patents. He always ensured that whatever new form of technology he used was protected by patent laws he did this so as to ensure that his designs and innovations are not copied by the competitors. Dyson also analyzed the market to establish the true market requirements. With this information, he was able to devise a product that would meet all the market requirements and satisfy them (Bessant & Tidd, 2011, p. 267). Dyson was also involved in a move that raised numerous criticisms in its home country, the United Kingdom. James Dyson decided to move its manufacturing plant from United Kingdom to Malaysia and China. This move was to ensure that the company stays competitive. The cost of production in the home country became too much and the move was to ensure that the c ost of production was minimized which will in turn lead to an increase in the amount of profit that was generated. The move to Malaysia, according to James Dyson, was so that they could have a testing facility close to their suppliers, of whom were all located in the eastern countries. This move was aimed at increasing efficiency in the company. However, the move resulted in the loss of hundreds of jobs in the United Kingdom. Imitation Competition is very stiff in the current market. This therefore means that the competitors of the company may try to imitate their biggest rivals in a bid to increase their sales. Due to the fact that James Dyson believed in patent protection so much, it became difficult for other competitors to imitate the company’s products. In my opinion therefore, I think that Dyson’s capabilities could be difficult to imitate. This is because James Dyson has studied school of arts. This therefore means that his ideas and innovations are very unique due to high innovative nature that he is capable of (Witcher & Chau, 2010, p. 79). I therefore think that the competitors may only be able to imitate Dyson’s capabilities in the design level. This is because the competitors will only get to see the product after it has been launched in the market. Dyson always ensures that all its secrets in the production line remain to be just secrets. This is also ensured by the manner in which security within the plant is handled. For starters, every door within the company is opened using a thumb print scanner. However much this is the case, there are still some areas of the company that are regarded to be off limits. That is, there are areas that not everybody is allowed to go in to. Furthermore, all of Dyson’s designs, technologies and innovations are protected by patent laws. This prohibits the competitors from copying any of their designs. As a result, Dyson’s products come out as unique and original designs. This has m ade it extremely impossible for the competitors to imitate anything with regards to Dyson’s products (Thompson & Martin, 2010, p. 167). Distinctive capabilities Dyson has over the years emerged to be at the top of its market. All this is owed to the fact that the company has several unique capabilities and qualities that help in ensuring the company remains competitive in nature. I my opinion, I think James Dyson’s unique ability to come up with new designs and innovations for the

The Invasion of Sicily Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

The Invasion of Sicily - Essay Example The invasion of Sicily had been on the agenda ever since the Casablanca Conference of January 1943. The success of the "TORCH" landings in French North Africa the previous November was the incubus of Franklin D. Roosevelt's and Winston Churchill's plan for a seaborne assault as soon as the Axis had been defeated in Tunisia. "TORCH was the first major amphibious assault against the Axis, although, in the Pacific, the marines landed on Guadalcanal on Aug 7th. It had to be staged from Continental US, go almost 3000 miles, through U boat infested waters, land troops on hostile beaches, and then keep the sea lanes open for reinforcements"2. While "TORCH" had been mostly unopposed, Sicily, it was estimated, would be a more difficult conquest because the Italians would be then fighting on their home ground, buttressed by good German troops. That notwithstanding, the allies remained undaunted. A blend of the battle-hardened men of Eighth Army under Montgomery, the profusion of US war ammunition and other materials, and American troops of the Seventh Army under Patton were considered enough to overwhelm the island garrison and bring the war to mainland Italy. Amphibious ships and landing craft were the resource that defined Allied military strategy in 1943-4, and it took six months to assemble enough for the main component of HUSKY, an operation involving 150,000 men and 3,000 ships. The Allied invasion of Sicily also known as "Operation Husky" was a major World War II invasion. During the invasion, the Allies took Sicily from the Axis. The Allies were primarily from the American, British, and Canadian armies. The axis represented Italy and Nazi Germany. The invasion is often referred to as a grand scale airborne and amphibious exercise, supplemented with approximately six weeks of land combat. The invasion of Sicily, documented all over the world, was heralded by Canadian newspapers. The invasion is described as one that was easy with little fatalities3. The reader is encouraged with the impression of the "shock and awe" that Iraq was met by the United States and British forces in the 21st century. Clearly, one reading the tales of control and bravery would never guess that Sicily was seized with worthy resistance. Newspaper accounts regale the at home reader with the "spectacle" of British and Canadian forces entering Sicilian borders with some stubborn resistance, but the tone is one of confidence. Eisenhower himself states: "The enemy's losses in men and equipment since the commencement of the campaign had been enormous. Of his panzer divisions, the equivalent of five had been destroyed and a further six severely mauled. The equivalent of 20 infantry divisions had been eliminated and 12 more (including 3 crack parachute divisions) had been badly cut up. Three divisions were trapped in Brittany and another division was isolated in the Channel Islands. By 25 August the enemy had lost, in round numbers, 400,000 killed, wounded, or captured, of which total 200,000 were prisoners of war"4. While the newspapers report with pride, the accomplishments of the axis, the history books tell a different story. Tales of heroism and outstanding bravery were reported in Canada. Indeed, one officer who rallied his troops by stating "Never mind the Germans, they can't shoot straight!" was

Uniforms in schools today Essay Example for Free

Uniforms in schools today Essay Students wearing uniforms prevents violence in todays schools. Uniforms are equal and give students a sense of security because everyone is the same. Students need to be able to go to school to learn, that should be the sole purpose of going to school. These days most schools dont have dress codes and students wear whatever they want. These kinds of clothing can be distracting and disrespectful to the students. Girls wear revealing shirts and tank tops, guys wear pants that fall down, and they also wear distracting types of shirts with violence or vulgar language on them. Uniforms are a lot more respectable and a lot more mature, and they wont be a distraction to the students and the teachers. Now, some people would say that uniforms are a little too formal. There are many different kinds of uniforms however. Private schools such as catholic schools have more formal uniforms with collared shirts and plaid skirts for the girls. For the boys collared shirts, ties and cargo pants. Students these days really take advantage of the dress code, they wear whatever they want and a lot of them get in trouble for it. Many students are sent home during school hours because their clothing is inappropriate. These students waste valuable learning time, and distract other students from learning as well as the teacher. Disrupting the class can be prevented if students wear uniforms. Uniforms could solve the problem that every school faces, the problem of dealing with students who break the rules of the dress code. Unfortunately, there are many other problems in the schools these days but uniforms are a good place to start. Uniforms come in many different shapes and styles. No one uniform is alike. Many uniforms are similar to the schools colors, but most are not as formal as you would think. Uniforms are made for one purpose only, to make students equal. Students dont understand the importance of a good education. Some people disagree with uniforms because they believe in freedom of speech. They believe that they have the right to wear whatever they want to. People like to express themselves by the way of wearing their own style. Students express themselves in many different ways, but the most popular way that they express themselves is wearing what they want. Lots of students have different opinions on the situation, some agree and some disagree. My sister  goes to a Catholic school and she wears a uniform everyday. She enjoys the strict atmosphere of the school and she loves wearing a uniform. In her opinion, its saves money and you dont have to worry about what to wear everyday. Now some people would say that uniforms are expensive and you only wear them for a few years, plus there are different kinds of uniforms for different seasons. Plus people grow and you cant return them after wearing them. You can resell them but you can never get your money completely back. However, most people who go to private schools are rich, so they dont really care about spending money on uniforms every few years. Education gives you the ability to learn. It gives you a broad aspect of what life would be like after high school and college. A lot of people strive for a higher education, college. They believe that having a higher education will make them succeed in life more than just having a high school education. This may be true, but it isnt exactly a proven fact. Some people just arent made to go to college. Some do just fine with a high school degree. Everyone is different, it just depends how motivated you are and how far you want your education to go. The most important thing is an education, it shows how much you really want to learn by how far you go. Uniforms can do a lot of good in schools, it can prevent violence and keep students on track in school. Uniforms are not distracting and everyone is equal, no one can judge anyone if they are all wearing the same thing.

Compared to others, America is a young country, a baby in many eyes. Despite its age though, The US has gone through some amazing changes through its historical events. Some of the events were large, such as the Revolutionary war and the civil war. Others meanwhile, were more subtle, like the Watergate scandal. Five events stand out as being the most important in Shaping America into what it is today. They are: the counterculture movement, the scandal at Watergate, World War One, the Holocaust, and the making of the Atomic bomb. #5: The counterculture movement. It began in the 1960’s as teens started to question the value system of the government. They turned away from the materialistic views of the older generation to make their own society, a kind of Utopia.
